The Origins and Character of Pocitos
The name "Pocitos" has its roots in the landscape that existed here before the neighbourhood was formally established. According to historical plans by Ana Quirós de Seco, José María Reyes, and Eduardo Martínez, the area was originally bounded by the intersection of what is now Calle Benito Blanco and a stream known as the Arroyo de Silva, near a saladero (salt works), extending to the mouth of the Río de la Plata.
The Arroyo de los Pocitos was historically known for the washerwomen (lavanderas) who would travel to its banks to wash the clothes of their employers in the walled city. They would dig small wells — pocitos or cachimbas — in the riverbanks to draw clean water. This practical tradition gave the neighbourhood its name.
In 1881, the national government issued a decree addressing the irregular settlement that had formed in the Pocitos area, ordering its formal delimitation and realignment. On 5 May 1886, the town of "Nuestra Señora de los Pocitos" was officially inaugurated. By 1888, a general plan of the Pueblo de los Pocitos identified four distinct sub-neighbourhoods: Fortuna, Víctor Manuel, Caprera, and Artigas — situated between the two streams of Pocitos Grande and Pocitos Chico.

Pocitos Today: Neighbourhood Character
From its artisan and laundry origins, Pocitos evolved over the 20th century into one of Montevideo's most sought-after residential addresses. Today, the neighbourhood is defined by its coastal positioning, its dense mix of residential buildings and active commercial streets, and a quality of life that is consistently among the highest in Uruguay's capital.
Architecturally, Pocitos is eclectic — a product of continuous development through the 20th century. The neighbourhood contains early 20th-century ornate residential buildings alongside 1950s-70s mid-century apartment towers, 1980s-90s residential developments, and increasingly, contemporary new-build projects. This diversity of stock means that buyers at every price point can find something in Pocitos, from a compact studio in a functional 1970s block through to a newly built penthouse with panoramic sea views.
